This is the perfect occasion for all MCS members (and non-members alike) to mingle, eat, drink, and be merry :D - before we head back to our beloved Malaysia!
The MCS committee would also like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude and bid farewell to the MCS University of Bristol leavers. We recognise your commitment and dedication to the MCS, and we are confident that you will do the same for the general public once you take on your role in the wider society. So, this night is also dedicated to you!

Projek Pelita - UKEC

Dear respected students.

Projek Pelita is currently recruiting!

We are currently looking for dedicated and passionate people who are willing to take responsibility for roles such as the Assistant Project Director, Publicity Director, Logistics Director and Public Relations Officer.

A team is need pronto, to get the ball rolling and make further preparations.

For those who might not know what Projek Pelita is about, basically it’s a project which aims to refurbish four under-equipped libraries in Sarawak with books. The main concept of this project is to hold book collection drives in schools, shopping malls and bookstores around Kuching in aid of these libraries;

- Perpustakaan Desa Kpg. Santubong, Kuching North City Hall
- Perpustakaan Desa Kpg. Buntal, Kuching North City Hall
- Perpustakaan Desa Kpg. Simpok, Padawan Municipal Council
- Perpustakaan Desa Kpg. Mundai, Padawan Municipal Council

The length of the book campaign would be roughly 3 weeks, then would process and deliver the books to the libraries in the 4th week.

Those interested to help out need not be based in Kuching throughout the 4 weeks- we are looking for people who are willing to give up a little bit of time over their summer to dedicate to a good cause. And even though you have yet to return to Kuching by the 13th of June, you can still be part of the team. All we want is commitment and dedication! :)

As this is the first time the project is running, let’s make this a learning process for us to see how much we can contribute to the society through the project and hopefully expand it in the future to further rural libraries. So join us! Let's contribute to the society and make this project a success!

Projek Kalsom Booklet - UKEC

The Projek Kalsom 17 booklet will be given to all 200 students of Projek Kalsom 17 who come from less fortunate backgrounds but have the potentials to excel academically from all over Melaka. It will also be published on Projek Kalsom website for other students who are not able to attend Projek Kalsom 17. It is hope that this booklet will give the students some insight on the following topics:

University Experiences
Pre-University: Sixth Form, Matriculation, Foundation, A levels, Diploma
Study Tips
The 6 Month "Gap Year": What you can do while waiting for SPM results and before starting college.
Introduction to Careers: Arts, Media & Mass Communication, Medicine & Health Sciences, Physical Sciences & Engineering, Tourism & Hospitality, Law, International Relations etc
Education funding

However, it must be noted that we are not trying to be over-ambitious in our approach of writing/compiling articles as it can be quite an elephantine task! What Projek Kalsom hopes to do with this booklet is to inspire these students to explore on the personal accounts of the topics above. The aim of this booklet is to give a personal touch to the project as students will receive many other materials that will give them an overview of possible careers and scholarships.

I highly encourage everyone to tell their stories and experiences as this will be useful to the students who may be having similar experiences. The deadline for submission of these articles is 7th June 2011.

Anyway, please inform us if you have better ideas for the booklet as we may not have the best ideas! If you are also interested taking any submitting articles or have any further questions please contact Adam Omar, our Editor at ao506a@gmail.com.

Assalamualaikum wbt.

Alhamdulillah, syukur ke hadrat Ilahi kerana diberi kesempatan utk berkumpul dan beribadat kepada-Nya di dalam 'Program Solat Hajat' yg telah diadakan di Wills Prayer Room. Pihak AJK MCS ingin mengucapkan setinggi-tinggi penghargaan kepada semua yg hadir kerana sudi meluangkan masa mengimarahkan majlis yg sederhana tetapi cukup bermakna ini. Semoga proses pengisian rohani ini, sedikit sebanyak dapat meningkatkan lagi semangat kita utk berjuang habis-habisan di medan ilmu dan pada masa yg sama tidak sesekali melalaikan tanggungjawab kita sebagai hamba Allah swt.

Pihak AJK MCS juga ingin merakamkan sekalung penghargaan kepada Abg Azim beserta isteri yang sudi hadir ke majlis ini utk memimpin solat dan bacaan surah Yassin serta berkongsi ilmu sebagai iktibar kepada kita semua.

Diharapkan agar program seperti ini dapat diteruskan lagi pada masa akan datang dan menjadi satu tradisi bagi kita sebagai sebuah komuniti di Bristol.

The Malaysian Healthcare System: Changes to Come

As the realisation of Vision 2020 draws closer, it is clear that our health system must undergo substantial changes in order to achieve standards on par with developed nations. Amongst the subject matters that hold the key to achieving this transition is the increase in the number of skilled healthcare professionals and the quality of the delivery of healthcare service to the
population.

No doubt, medical facilities such as the hospitals in Sungai Buloh, Selayang and Ampang easily meet international healthcare standards, however, the rest of Malaysia must contend with healthcare services that are of a lower standard. Take our largest state Sarawak into context, where 2.5 million people rely upon one hospital in Kuching that is fast becoming overcrowded and understaffed. Certainly there have been new developments such as the 1Malaysia Clinics that give disadvantaged groups access to proper healthcare, but therein arises another series of questions as to the feasibility of the scheme in terms of its funding.

Our medical students here in the United Kingdom also face tough questions that they must answer. Malaysian medical students spending 5 years in the United Kingdom no doubt must carry a heavy burden with regards to the scale of the investment on their part. They return to face the realities of what can only be described as relatively low salaries, subpar working environments, and unattractive career prospects back home to cite a few of the problems they encounter.

The council believes it is timely that the Health Ministry take urgent action into plugging the brain drain in the medical profession. By clearing the air and answering their queries, as well as addressing these concerns with an unbiased view on the matter, we believe that the Ministerial Series will bring enormous benefit to what could be the seeds of a world class medical workforce.

With the belief that a progressive nation is built on the backs of a healthy workforce, clearly the Health Ministry has an important role to play in our nation’s development. The UKEC is honoured to call upon the Health Minister to conduct a series of intellectual discussions showcasing the issues our health system faces at home and the initiatives that our government is undertaking in order to resolve them.

NEW COMITTEE FOR 2011/2012

The time has come again for the MCS Annual Grand Meeting (AGM) for the year of 2011 and as all of you may know the previous committee will step down and a new committee will be elected. Thanks to the club advisor, Dr Evans for joining us and not forget to the members who showed up on that day to make this event into realityJ.

The AGM started with a speech from the Advisor, Dr Evans and followed by the president. Then, there is a little presentation from vice president about the activities been held for the previous years and a budget presentation from the treasurer.

Then, it’s time for every candidate to present their manifesto for the post they are running for. We can hear many interesting manifesto especially for the president post.

This time, MCS finds its way across the channel to our nearest neighbour, Cardiff. As early as 9 am in the morning, a group of seven girls and three guys board the train heading towards Cardiff Central which was roughly half an hour away from Bristol. For only £7.50 per person, we manage to find ourselves touring the Cardiff Castle, learning the history and the story behind the heavy, expensive decorations in the inside of the castle, enjoying the Italian food in the famous Cafe Minuet..and of course, shopping! :)
We were captivated by the story of the man who had so much money, he didn't know what to do with it, as well as the extraordinary traditional customs of a man expressing his love to a woman by presenting to her a spoon! Unique isn't it?
It was certainly a great field trip with an amazing weather (minus the very strong wind..:P) and we hope that there would be more field trips to come. :)!

Ice Skating :)

It is the time of the year again for The Annual Ice Skating Event! :) Cheers for the many members who showed up...especially those who never skated before, bravely stepping on the ice rink trying to keep themselves from falling. We had a lot of fun, learning to skate, the occasional drops on ice..the loud music and pizzas at the end of the event. After all, it is not everyday that we get to eat fresh pizzas at College Green in the middle of the night right? Many thanks to the organiser, Syafiq, all committee members, and of all ALL the members who showed up. You certainly contributed into making this event a very FUN one :)!

From Bristol to Nottingham :)

It seems like a tradition now, that every year, MCS, together with the MSSA members, would join forces and send over representative teams from Bristol to compete in the various games held in the University of Nottingham. As the start of the first weekend of November creeps in bringing with it the cold air of winter, our teams gave their very best shot in the competitions, cheered by the loyal supporters that tagged along all the way up north. The results were worth all the efforts put in, as this year, the teams from Bristol obtained more achievements than the year before. The netball team won three out of 5 games, proving to be a strong challenge to any of their opposing teams. The football team went up to the 16th position out of all the UK universities that competed. We are also very proud of the achievement of our squash player, Hafiizah Othman, who won 2nd place overall. Of course, not forgetting our badminton players who fought till the last drop of sweat in all their matches. And finally, cheers to the loyal supporters who were willing to sacrifice their Saturdays to support the teams all day without fail. Congratulations to everyone who participated :) and we look forward to have more achievements in the next Nottingham Games to come. Cheers :)

Summer's gone and autumn sets in. It is time for us to get back behind our books and study, study, study! :) but before we go back to the routine of seeing powerpoint slides everyday, jotting down notes and catching up with deadlines...a mission needed to be accomplished. and that is to welcome our freshers joining us this year. the more the merrier :)and through this week number 0, mcs took part and organised a few events to make the freshers warm up and get to know the MCS community in Bristol.
We started out with the Freshers Fair on on the 7-8th of october 2010, followed by a welcoming potluck on the 10th of october 2010. :)

Hey everyone :) Firstly, SORRY for the super late update on the MCS Annual Dinner 2010. But now, here I am with pictures pictures pictures :) [and more to come] ^_^ id definitely do an album in our fb group when i get all the pictures for the night.
For starters, thank you to everyone who came...and everyone who helped. The dinner wouldn't be a blast without each and everyone of you. :D
Special thanks to the committee who worked so hard day and night to prepare for the amazing video, performances, not to mention the food~:) I guess we all appreciated one night free from pasta and pizzas to go back to our nasi kerabu roots huh? :D and from english movies to big laughs of bits of P Ramlee movies ^_^

the dinner started with a speech by our president followed by an amazing band performance of p.ramlee songs that got us all glued to our seats. Later, we all "attacked" the nasi kerabu counter and had dinner with videos of p.ramlee movies to entertain us. The whole crowd had an exciting moment competing on who has the most P Ramlee knowledge in the quiz which ended up in a tie. Everyone's breath was held in the one minute where the two leading teams tried to list as many P.Ramlee movies as they could.
The dinner ended with the lucky draw and the best dress award that was won by Muhammad Afiq Asyraf (guys) and Sarah Abdul Halim (girls). ^_^

It was certainly an enjoyable event..and one night of having a total "Malay" time :D
Again, many thanks to each and everyone who contributed to the success of the event and may we have more superb events to come.

MCS is back again, now bringing to you the ultimate event of the year, the MCS Annual Dinner 2010!!!! :) Lets go back to the world of Anakku Sazali, Pendekar Bujang Lapok and Tiga Abdul, singing along to Bunyi Gitar and dressing up in the glamorous world of the 1940s and 1950s. Yes, our theme this year will feature the legendary Malay artist of all time: P. Ramlee. :) :)

Free on the 1st of May 2010? Come and join us at the Anson's Room, Student Union, starting from 6pm to 10pm and try out our awesome menu of Nasi Kerabu, Rojak Buah and Bubur Pulut Hitam for the night. There are also great performances lined up and games to enjoy :)

So, what are you waiting for? Let your imagination run wild and show up in the classic Malay attires of the time, or a smart coat and tie, or the glamorous Saloma dress, and get to know more of the other MCS members for just one night. ^_^
Where do you get the tickets? Just find our treasurer, Nadhra, at the Wills Memorial Building on the 23rd, 28th and 30th April 2010 with only £10 and you're in for the dinner :)

It is the time of the year again: The MCS Annual General Meeting (AGM) of 2010. Many thanks to the members who showed up as early as 9am last Saturday to make it happen. The AGM started out with the presentation by the MCS committee of 2009/10, followed by the speech from the Advisor, President and Vice President of MCS. Among issues touched are the importance of knowing the history of MCS and why it was formed, and the need for participation and support from all the members to the events organised by MCS.
Soon after that was the manifesto and election of the new committee of 2010/11. Curious to know who they are? Here goes :)

greetings to all mcs members,
welcome back to bristol and i hope you had a lovely summer holiday. MCS facebook has been inactive for quite some time.but i hope it's still not too late to wish happy eid mubarak!
mcs will be organising series of great activities in the nearest time (freshers fair, ceramah by ustaz erfino& etc). it has been awhile since we last met each other, insyaAllah there will be raya + housewarming party as well. so look out for latest info and do keep in touch!

It's Here! : Silat Seni Gayong

It's finally here. The Malay Cultural Society cordially invites all its members to join our new and exciting endeavor - Silat Seni Gayong.
A martial art, an art of warriorship, a self-defense technique and above all a fun activity for all to enjoy!

Of course, everything is free of charge. You are not obliged to pay for anything to give it a go!
You have paid for your MCS membership fee, so why would you have pay more? It's free!
We don't require any special badge-studded uniform during our training sessions.
But if you would like one, we can order it for you from Malaysia for about RM80+postage ~ GBP20 or less.
We only require that you wear a decent and fairly sturdy sports attire.
Bring some drinking water too if you like.
For girls, we suggest that you bring a 'kain batik' to wear as a sampin together with a track bottom, in order to protect your decency.
Also be assured that there will be no touching or grappling between opposite genders.
Islamic Syari'ah will always be observed.

We managed to secure room bookings for the next three weeks of our training sessions.
Details are as follows :

Saturday 22/11/08 - Brunel Suite, Student Union 10am-12pm
Saturday 29/11/08 - Brunel Suite, Student Union 10am-12pm
Saturday 06/12/08 - MR6 Large, Student Union 10am-12pm

Each session will include

~30 minutes of warming up and exercises
~30 minutes of revision from last week's lesson
~30 minutes of new lessons

There will be a break time of ~10 minutes of course, for you to have a few gulps of water.
We will limit explanatory talks to the very minimum so that we can focus more on the physical part of the lesson.
At the end of every session, we will open for an informal Q&A. Here is where long talks are appropriate. The instructors will stay as long as they need to answer all your questions.
We will also include hand-outs for you to better understand what Silat Seni Gayong is all about and to help you memorize the lessons.
We recommend and welcome you to bring note pads, cameras, video cameras or any device to assist you in memorizing the moves you're going to learn.

We will treat beginners as beginners and we won't expect too much of you.
Everybody has to start somewhere, right? Don't worry,we'll guide you through the process.
As you progress, you will adapt to more demanding level of training.
Eventually, you may get to join tournaments and performances all over the UK and Europe!
We make an effort to give you as much exposure of the world of Silat Seni Gayong as you like.
But we won't push you, you generate your own progress.

Since we are the Malay *Cultural* Society, I thought we should have more of things *cultural*.
Not that we are ditching our beloved culture of indulging in those glorious cuisines... (^_^)
Just thought it may be a good idea to add something else to that list.

All classes are free of charge.
No fees, no mandatory uniform, no attendance record, no exams. =)
But there could be tournaments and performances if you're interested.
